Let’s talk sustainable tourism with Hilton Surfers Paradise

By Carol Fung

This National Recycling Week we’re launching an ongoing series of talks with sustainability advocates and organisations that we have partnered with to drive environmental, social and governance strategies (ESG) and to deliver on their carbon reduction goals. Today, we’re talking about sustainable tourism with Sergey Kozlov, who is the Director of Operations at Hilton Surfers Paradise.

SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL AND TOURISM

Guest Sergey Kozlov, Director of Operations at Hilton Surfers Paradise.

Envirobank’s founder Narelle Anderson gets together with Sergey Kozlov, who is the Director of Operations at Hilton Surfers Paradise to discuss our support of Hilton’s “Travel with Purpose” strategy – their ESG framework to encourage responsible travel and tourism globally. “Travel with Purpose” provides guiding principles behind their operational and supply chain decisions to ensure they make the world a better place. At the heart of it, Hilton believes they can make the world a better place through sustainable tourism and travel, by meeting their ambitious environmental and social targets.

We partnered with Hilton Surfers Paradise in June 2021 and since then, they have diverted 96,290 recyclable bottles and cans from landfill and reduced their environmental impact through the abatement of 15,662 kg of carbon emissions—achieved through the container deposit scheme “Containers for Change” in Queensland.

Tune in to the conversation and hear more about how the hotel has implemented the recycling program through various challenges, other climate positive initiatives to get the hotel to net zero (amongst them food recycling and amenities recycling—which they actually use the accumulated refunds from CDS recycling with Envirobank to fund), and the small but impactful guest behaviour changes we can adopt when we travel, to lessen our carbon footprint and affect recycling outcomes.

“It doesn’t take a great effort, it’s all about awareness and little steps. Things like putting a bottle next to the rubbish bin makes a big difference and makes a big impact. On one hand it shows care to the team member who is going to be cleaning the room after your stay, but it also shows that you care about the environment.”
– Sergey Kozlov
